Gila Rut Aveda Salons’ trendsetting hair and makeup artists have kicked off a busy October, taking part in San Diego’s own 5-day fashion celebration of our incredibly talented ‘home grown’ designer talent.

It’s all about Fashion Week San Diego® (FWSD), featuring the runway collections of 26 fabulous fashion designers, along with hair and makeup artistry that completes the couture. Gila Rut is among the sponsors, dedicating 10 members of their design team from their Hillcrest, Otay Ranch and Torrey Hills salon locations to ‘work the collections’ — just as they have during prestigious New York Fashion Week.

According to Gila Rut co-owner Karla Lopez-Martinez, there is no doubt that San Diego’s own designer talent merits its fair share of the fashion news spotlight on local, regional and national levels.

As we celebrate our 20^th year in business, I am inspired to check in with all of you!

First and foremost, I cannot believe that I am old enough to have a business that is 20 years old!  But, I do and am so proud of the work we have done over these past two decades.

My journey (with my Mom) began in 1992 with a dream to open a salon (well, the dream was mine and I coerced Mom into tagging along).  I remember living in the Hillcrest area and watching the new shopping center being built from the ground up. I knew we were supposed to be there!

As a 46 year old Salon Owner, wife and mother of a 2.5 year old, I am always striving to look and feel great. I almost feel it is my obligation to look the part, but where do I look for an updated image? I am lucky enough to have a team of amazing make-up artists and stylists that are looking out for my best interest.
